Working
out in a double is all about getting two to be one - two different people
rowing in such unison that their power seems to be quadrupled not just
doubled.
Endeavor
to make all four blades enter the water at exactly the same instant,
move through exactly the same arc, and give up the water simultaneously.
Some mornings
on the river are just perfect - the sun rises over trees into a clear
blue sky, a soft wind comes on to ripple the mirror flat river. The
music in the background of this clip is Vivaldi's Spring. Though it
is July 1, early summer, dogs days coming down, this particular morning,
these young rowers - Vivaldi's Spring.
Coach
D'Amico is preparing them for the Independence Day Regatta - just four
days off, as this workout comes to an end. Time to recover from the
harder exhausting, strength building workouts of the last few weeks,
and concentrate on "swing" - the feeling that the rowers get
when they are rowing well, and together - the crew, the boat, the water,
the breathing are all in harmony.
This next
video clip show a young men's double in summer of 2007. Javier Murillo,
coaching, is instructing them on the "quick catch" - as they
get to the moment of blade insertion, they simultaneously and explosively
drive with their legs - applying pressure on the blade face and against
the river.
