Please see the notes below from the Schuylkill Navy regarding boathouse and river access during the Papal visit. Restrictions begin Tonight, Thursday, at 10 PM.
“As of today, we now also have from verified City and Police sources that there will be NO PEDESTRIAN NOR BICYCLE TRAFFIC ANYWHERE ON KELLY DRIVE FROM THURSDAY (TONIGHT) AT 10 PM THROUGH SOME TIME ON MONDAY (NOT YET VERIFIED). This is an important from what had been published on distributed maps, etc. PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR CLUB MEMBERS KNOW THIS, AS IT WILL PRECLUDE THEM FROM ACCESSING THE BOATHO– USES, IF THEY PLANNED TO DO SO DURING THE PAPAL WEEKEND. Note that we have been in touch with those few members of our community who have their legal residence on Boathouse Row.
WHITEMARSH BOAT CLUB INVITES YOU TO ROW: SUNDAY AT 6:45 AM
Feeling like your fall head racing training will go to crap if you miss a whole weekend of rowing ? The nice chums at Whitemarsh Boat Club have invited all experienced Boathouse Row-based rowers to use this weekend as a great excuse to come visit. On Sunday morning at 6:45 am, Joe Sullivan (of Vesper/WBC) coaches an organized row…..and we’re ALL invited! There are only so many boats, and it can get a little messy coordinating tons of people, so – right now – there is room for 25 people to sign up. Share this link with your Club members (it will also be on Facebook and Twitter), and encourage them to drive West (not on I-76, though….thanks, Secret Service) to Conshohocken. They’ll have a great row with great people, have a chance to see the spectacular new Conshohocken Rowing Center from the water, and get treated to yummy breakfast/coffee after. Please note the following re: the Papal visit and how it impacts rowing and club access.
PAPAL VISIT RIVER CLOSURE AND OTHER FAQ’s
We received OFFICIAL and DIRECT communications from authorities that the river will be closed to all on-water traffic (100% of all boats, etc) from Girard down to the dam (and below as well) from Friday morning at 6 am through Monday morning at 2 am. Please see below the official and full restrictions. It’s important that we’re viewed (as a full community) as being fully supportive of these security restrictions, so we appreciate everyone’s cooperation. We’ll post reminders at every boathouse (so, please leave those up!), and we will also post news of this restriction on all social media channels. We appreciate everyone sharing word widely and frequently throughout their clubs (and equally important that all tenant school coaches also receive this message).
As of now, we have every reason to believe that Boathouse Row will still be accessible via pedestrian and bicycle access and that we will be permitted entry in our clubhouses. It’s possible that this access could change and – if so – we will alert all of you immediately. If you have any further questions (or receive any info that you believe will be helpful to the community at large), please send a note to us (Schuylkill Navy FB/Twitter) and we’ll reply and try to get you answers as quickly as possible.
